Client situation
The client is one of the leading specialists in creating an efficient cash flow. They offer comprehensive solutions at all levels of society including financial institutions, retailers, other commerce related business and the public sector. Their industry is rapidly evolving, making it vital to understand the underlying market dynamics to ensure future success. The business is complex in nature and at the forefront of technological advancement, requiring very specific leadership criteria. This client has 21,000 employees who operate at about 400 branch offices spread across 20 countries. The company is listed on Nasdaq OMX Large Cap. The former CEO left the company during 2015.

After resignation of the former CEO and no long-term replacement available, Alumni was involved in the full-scale process of finding a new CEO.

Solution
The process involved a close dialogue with the board and owners to ensure correct match to candidate profile. This assignment was clearly not a straightforward search but challenged our advisory role and our ability to quickly gain an understanding of the industry and complexity of the business. It was key for us to clearly communicate and be able to discuss the challenges and future opportunities for this industry, as well as the intricacy of the business case in order to attract the best candidate in a hesitant market.

Results
The final choice fell on a candidate from Sweden with solid experience from an industry with a strong customer focus, within the international retail sector. As the client employs a large amount of people operating at the very frontline with daily customer contact, the new CEO needed to be a strong people person with great presence and communication skills to really lead and be a role model for the organisation. The delicacy and intricacy of the business required a CEO with presence to instil confidence and trustworthiness. This client operating and experiencing up close the pressure of digital transformation and being pressured to quickly evolve and improve efficiency to achieve sustainable results, also demanded a leader with great vision.
